Animal cruelty is often broken down into two main categories which are active and passive cruelty. Active cruelty is where a person intentionally causes harm to an animal, such as beating, set on fire, or killed. Dog fighting is also known as an active cruelty. Passive cruelty is more of a neglect or abandonment. In some cases, starvation, dehydration, parasite infestations, left outside in the elements, or no veterinary care when an animal needs medical attention takes place.
